Mei Li and Rune have been best friends since the eighth grade, sharing high and lows as they approach graduation, sympathize with each other over broken hearts, and share their dreams for the future. Mei Li wants to attend MSU, get a degree in computer graphics, and someday find her perfect match. Rune, the star athlete, has similar hopes…until his eighteenth birthday, when his so-called parents inform him that he's part of a top secret android experiment called E.V.E.R. and may not be human. Will Mei Li's support be enough to get him through his nightmare of uncertainty? And what will happen when best friends finally realize they just might be something more?

The mystery of Rune's true nature is revealed too quickly and easily in this short story. The sypnosis given in Amazon's product description says Rune "may not be human", which is because he was part of an experiment where couples agreed to take in a child, but were not told whether they would be caring for a droid or a human child. It was a double-blind study with a control group. However, if that were the case, Rune's parents would certainly not have any information about him, so Rune and his friend Mei Li wouldn't have been able to figure things out so quickly and easily. This part of the plot felt sloppy and not well thought out, which is a pity, because it's the climax of the entire story. It felt like the author couldn't figure out a better way to have us find out who/what Rune is. She took the easy way out; it's just too convenient that Mei Li would be able to stumble onto the information they want, without having to even look too hard. Important papers simply left lying around, out in the open for anyone to see? Yeah, right. This big reveal about Rune comes at 75% with another quarter of the story to go. The rest of the story felt like an anti-climax. There's no discussion of the implications when they find out who/what Rune is. It appears that nothing is going to change and Rune and Mei Li's lives seem set to continue as they always have. That's a real let-down. All that build-up, and the story goes nowhere. There's no pay-off.
Another thing that bugged me is that the science of it all was never explained. How do you create a droid that can grow from a baby into a teenager? Have they managed to create an organic chassis? I'm supposed to take for granted that this was possible, but it stretches my imagination too much. Droids are robots. I don't have any problems picturing a humanoid droid, even one that resembles a human so closely that you can't tell the difference. And I don't have any problems imagining a droid with a brain that evolves and learns much like a human baby's might. But a droid with a chassis that grows and develops as the human body does? That takes some explaining.
Finally, Mei Li's mum and dad are just too laid-back about it all. Top-secret science experiment, something previously unheard of, and they don't even look surprised when Mei Li tells them. That was part of the let-down.
I think this author has definite potential. The story was entertaining (the relationship between Rune and Mei Li is quite sweet), and there were no problems with spelling or grammar. I did, however, feel dissatisfied due to the reasons I've outlined above. So I'll give it three stars, because it's not fantastic, but it's not bad, either.

The author and my wife used to work together, so this was a thrilling download. Not really a romance reader myself.
well written heart felt story that kept this reader wanting to read more and find what the end would tell.
